University of California Furloughs & Salary Cuts... : (

On Wednesday, the UC Board of Regents officially approved President Yudof's proposed furlough and salary reduction plan to help address the staggering $813 Million dollar budget shortfall our system is currently facing. This salary cut/furlough plan is being taken by ALL UC employees across the 10 campus system, in addition to a mandatory 20% budget cut that all individual departments are required to make. So despite the salary cuts, layoff are almost inevitable in many departments. And sadly enough, student fees will also be increased by over 9% in the coming year. It is a sad, sad situation.

What this means for me and others in my pay class, is a mandatory 16 day furlough, which translates into a 6% salary cut that will be taken off the top of my paycheck. Joy. What great news to an expectant mother/new home owner with a little baby on the way! But we're hangin in there, trying to stay optimistic, and having faith that everything will work out....somehow.
