The recently installed signage on our new Career Center building has generated a lot of buzz on campus, and caught the attention of the Daily Cal!

Although the specific date of its opening has not been determined, the UC Berkeley Career Center will move away from its 2111 Bancroft Way location and closer to the south side of campus.

The relocation of the current, seismically poor center to 2440 Bancroft Way was part of the Lower Sproul project, which was approved by students in the 2010 ASUC general election. The main reason for the move, according to the center’s director Tom Devlin, was the inconvenience of the near downtown location.

Christine Shaff, communications director of the campus’s Facilities Services Department, said the approved budget for the project to renovate a part of 2440 Bancroft for the Career Center was $3.2 million.

“(The relocation) will be a good thing,” said UC Berkeley junior Elise Marsh, who frequented the center. “It will be more accessible and attract more students.”

According to the center’s Assistant Director Suzanne Helbig, after 18 months of planning, the center’s new building will be more vibrant and accessible for students. The new building will have two floors with a staircase connecting them. There will also be skylights to bring natural light in and double-pane windows in the front. The career center will also have digital kiosks for students to check in when entering so that employers can see which students are at the center.

A new event space designed to accommodate 100 people will also be part of the new building. This new event space, Helbig said, will allow more activities to happen at more flexible times. Because of its new location near campus, more students will also be able to participate in the events.

“I’m super excited for its relocation,” Helbig said. “ The building will be vibrant, closer to restaurants and I’ll be closer to my campus colleagues.”
