Every parent does what works best for their child - and every parent knows their own limits. I can handle lack of sleep better than a lot of moms that I know, but that does not work for everyone and I know that. I got very lucky with my older two sons, they both slept through the night around 6-7 weeks of age...I was so spoiled. My third son, however..was 14 months old before he did that.
